United started the season with a bang, dumping Birmingham City out of the League Cup at St Andrews.
Debuts were handed out to four players, with Robbie Cundy, Paul ‘The Digger’ Digby, Wes Hoolahan and Joe Ironside making their first appearances, with new boys Jack Iredale and Adam May debuting from the bench.

Starting enthusiastically, the U’s were perhaps unlucky not to be ahead early on, Luke Hannant thwarted by a steward with an errant extra ball. Hannant also put one over early on. Nineteen minutes into the game saw United earn a free kick, and Hannant put it on the head of Cundy to head in a debut goal. Despite Birmingham hitting the bar the U’s stayed solid and went into the break 1-0 ahead.

The second half saw United consolidate and continue to put pressure on the hosts, whilst Knoyle and Mitov had good games to ensure we made it through to the next round and a date with our Amber-clad Welsh rivals, Newport County.
