Cast your mind back to January 2020. Stevenage were rock bottom of the league, having only won twice all season, scoring only fifteen goals. They arrived at the Abbey ready for a pasting, right?
It’s now December 2020. Stevenage (having only avoided relegation due to Macclesfield being a complete and utter basket case off the pitch) are rock bottom of the league, having only won twice all season, managing only twelve goals. Cambridge United visit ready to hand out a pasting…
We all know what happened in January, as they turned us over 4-0 at home in one of the worst performances this club has ever seen. A second 4-0 home thrashing a week later to Salford bought about the end of Colin Calderwood’s reign of dull terror, and the beginning of Mark Bonner’s bright new future.
After Boxing Day’s hard-fought win over Orient, United sit just outside the playoffs, despite a pretty terrible run of late. Games come thick and fast over the Xmas period, so some squad rotation will be expected, with Dimi Mitov coming in for Callum Burton the most likely change in our book.
Expected U’s Line-Up: Mitov, Knoyle, Darling, Taylor, Iredale, Davies, Digby, May, Dunk, Ironside, Mullin
Of course Bonner’s biggest headache is how to fit Wes Hoolahan into his favoured attacking midfield role whilst sticking to his favoured 4-4-2 formation. We think he’ll drop to the bench vs Stevenage, with Leon Davies getting a run out in place of Hannant who has run himself into the ground all season. To us the obvious choice would be to replace Adam May with Hoolahan, and moving him a bit further forward, but this exposes Digby and leaves him to do a lot of work in the middle. If you’re going to try it against anyone, try it against the shittest team in the entire Football League.
Who’s Their Player To Watch? Does Barry Hayles still play for them? No? In that case, no idea.
Who’s In The Dugout? A familiar face to some U’s fans, former youth product Alex Revell spent four years at the Abbey being constantly deemed to be not good enough to make it as a footballer before going on to play at Championship level as we slid out of the league. He’s been at Stevenage since February, replacing prize twat Graham Westley, who himself replaced even bigger twat Dino Maamria.
What’s Their Recent Form Like? P5, W1, D3, L1, For 4, Against 7
Any Ex-United Players? We mentioned Alex Revell already, but the squad features precisely zero ex-U’s, unless you want to count defender Ben Coker who made the grand total of zero appearances for United earlier this year.
Last Time Out: United 0-4 Stevenage 18 January 2020
We’re not going to share the ‘highlights’ of this one, you all know what happened. They’re on YouTube if you really want to punish yourself.
