Southend (A) Match Preview

Originally pencilled in for late November, an unfortunate bout of Covid saw Southend call this game off at the 11th hour. Since then, they’ve picked up a few wins, but still find themselves planted to the seat of the table. Can Bonner’s mighty U’s bring back all three points from Roots Hall?

After Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Colchester we’ll be without Luke Hannant who suffered an injury, which should give Leon Davies a chance in the side, as it’s unlikely Wes Hoolahan will play two games in quick succession we expect Jack Iredale will come in on the left to complement Davies. Harvey Knibbs opened his account for the season on Saturday so should partner Mullin up front. In terms of formation, we expect Bonner to revert to a 4-4-2.

Expected U’s Line-Up: Mitov, Knoyle, Darling, Taylor, Dunk, Davies, May, Digby, Iredale, Mullin, Knibbs

Jubril Okedina will start on the bench, and it’s still probably too soon for Liam O’Neil to start, so he’ll join him. Hiram Boateng remains injured.

Who’s Their Player to Watch? Southend’s squad is mainly made up of relegation no-hopers and local non-league players who’ve blagged their way into a troubled side. Reeco Hackett-Fairchild has joined on loan from Portsmouth since we last looked at their squad, and already has a goal to his name, so we’ll go with him.

Who’s In The Dugout? It’s still Mark Molesley, who hasn’t been sacked yet, mostly because Southend are skint.

What’s Their Recent Form Like? P5, W2, D2, L1, For 4, Against 3

Any Ex-United Players? Harry Lennon, joined us on loan during that period where we seemed to have about thirty loanees a season. Played three times.

Last Time Out: Southend 3-1 Cambridge September 4 2018

A 3-1 defeat in the Checkatrade for the U’s, Reginald Lambe putting the U’s in front before Southend came back to win.

From The Archive: Southend 1-1 Cambridge December 22 1991

Yeah we used this footage in the match preview we did for the cancelled game, but there’s never a bad time to watch Lee Philpott smash them in wearing that Fujitsu shirt is there?

UTAS Moosenet Tip: 2-1 United, Mullin
