Forest Green (H) Match Preview

At this stage of the season, games don’t come much bigger than this: second play third, both teams on equal points, but FGR with two games in hand on the Mighty U’s. Win and it makes things a lot easier for us, lose and… well, it’s not going to be the end of the world to be honest.

With the exception of Dimi Mitov, Bonner has a full squad to pick from, although question marks hang over Harrison Dunk, Harvey Knibbs and Leon Davies. That means the a strong midfield of Digby and Boateng, with Hannant or Iredale the third man. Wes will as usual roam where he pleases, and we’re not going to stop him.

Expected U’s Line-Up: Burton, Knoyle, Drysdale, Taylor, Alese, Hoolahan, Digby, Boateng, Iredale, Mullin, Ironside

If tomorrow comes too soon for Dunk we think Bonner will again trust Aji Alese to deputise at left back, and after his two goals against Oldham we’re not going to bet on Jack Iredale being dropped from the midfield. Up front tomorrow gives Paul Mullin a great chance to finally beat David Crown’s record of 24 League goals in a season, which he equalled against Oldham.

Who’s Their Player To Watch? Jamille Matt leads the goalscoring charts for Rovers with 16 goals, but we’ll have our eye on Odin Bailey, an attacking player highly rated by his parent club Birmingham.

Who’s In The Dugout? Mark Cooper is the third longest-serving manager in the Football League (we’re not counting Harrogate’s Simon Weaver) having been at the New Lawn since 2016. Cooper is remembered fondly at the Abbey for his stint in charge of P*sh, where he recorded excellent results in his short tenure, gaining one win in in thirteen games.

What’s Their Recent Form Like? P5, W3, D1, L1, For 9, Against 7

Any Ex-United Players? Nope

Last Time Out: Forest Green 2-0 U’s December 12 2020

United drew a blank in this lacklustre defeat at the New Lawn in December. Paul Mullin hit the crossbar and Jamille Matt converted a penalty to give the hosts a 2-0 win.

From The Archive: Forest Green 2-2 U’s October 16 2008

Rumour has it that the current Vegan regime at Forest Green was implemented after seeing Danny Crow leap to power in a header in this game. “If he can do that, looking like that, imagine what he could do if he was fit” owner Vince Dale was allegedly heard saying after the game.

UTAS Moosenet Tip: 2-0 United, Mullin naturally.
