Newport (A) Match Preview

United are back in business again tomorrow, aiming to secure the last few points needed to gain promotion. Newport County are their opponents, here’s a run-down of what to expect.

Team wise, Callum Burton is a given in goal, and Kyle Knoyle and Jack Iredale will be the wide defenders. We suspect Declan Drysdale might come in to partner Greg Taylor in central defence, but Bonner has also been loyal to players after poor performances in the past, so don’t be surprised if Okedina keeps his place.

In midfield we think Digby will keep his place alongside Boateng, but Adam May or Luke Hannant could well come in to replace Liam O’Neil who could do with a break. Hoolahan is obviously a given, alongside Mullin and Ironside up front.

Expected U’s Line Up: Burton, Knoyle, Okedina, Taylor, Iredale, Digby, May, Boateng, Hoolahan, Mullin, Ironside

We think Bonner will stick to the diamond as it’s served us well so far, but we’ll need to be wary of the threat from Newport. They might not be in great form at the moment but should be respected.

Who’s Their Player To Watch? Joss Labadie is always a formidable opponent and will ensure Newport are tough to beat, whilst our old friend Kevin Ellison is the epitome of the wily, old lower league striker

Who’s In The Dugout? Michael Flynn has been in charge since 2017

What’s Their Recent Form Like? P5, W1, D2, L2, For 3, Against 4

Any Ex-United Players? With Robbie Willmott and Kyle Howkins out on loan, it leaves Mickey Demetriou and Ryan Haynes as the only ex-U’s in the Newport squad.

Last Time Out: Cambridge 2-1 Newport, October 10th 2020

That glorious all-white 50th Anniversary shirt, two Paul Mullin goals and a torrential downpour. This game had it all.

From The Archive: Newport 1-2 Cambridge, September 24 2016

We’ll take that again tomorrow…

UTAS Moosenet Tip: 2-1 United, Mullin

  1. Reading this on the Sunday night and re listening to the season preview podcast, where did it all go right? Young inexperienced manager, small squad etc. I could go on. It’s like the best kind of fever dream!
