“In 1998/99 season… this will show you how much of a novice I am… I was here, Cambridge played Brentford… the winner that day would win promotion to League One from League Two… that was twenty two years ago, the last time this club got promoted to that division… it was my last season as a season ticket holder, and somehow, somehow… I am here!”
Bill Livers, Ron Atkinson, John Docherty, John Beck, Roy McFarland, Richard Money. You can add a new name to that list now as Mark Bonner is the latest manager to take the U’s to promotion. The club moved quickly to reward Bonner with a three year contract extension this morning, meaning he’ll take charge of us in League One next season.

Much has been made of Bonner’s history at the club, from fan on the terraces to coach to manager. It’s fair to say his appointment was initially underwhelming, but Bonner has shown us fans what he’s all about by turning the U’s into a disciplined, hard to beat side with a strong dressing room and a focus on what makes Cambridge United great.
It’s been a difficult season off the pitch with the background of the COVID-19 pandemic, but Bonner has worked tirelessly through the past year to not only keep fans informed on what’s going on at the club, but to give us a football team worth tuning into iFollow each Saturday for.
