Wessi Signs!

Huge news in from the Abbey today, following the contract renewals of Dimitar Mitov, Harrison Dunk, Greg Taylor and Paul Digby that Wes Hoolahan has extended his contract for a season in League One.

Undoubtably the most talented player to have ever pulled on the Black & Amber shirt, one of the real tragedies of the Coronavirus pandemic (in a footballing sense) is that we didn’t get many opportunities to watch Hoolahan do his magic on the Abbey turf.

As well as possessing vision and creativity, Wes is a tireless runner, often dropping back to receive the ball in our own penalty area before carrying it the length of the pitch. He created plenty of chances for the strikers last season as well as weighing in with seven goals himself, every one seemingly made from nothing. On more than one occasion, opposition commentators noted that players were scared by his presence on the field.

Hoolahan has played in England for Blackpool and West Brom and was best known for his time at Norwich where he won promotion three times, as well as making over 100 Premier League appearances. Wes also represented the Republic of Ireland on forty-three occasions, scoring three times, most famously against Sweden at Euro 2016.

We can’t wait to see Wes back at the Abbey next season, and we’re sure he’s just as excited about being able to beat Ipswich two more times.
